“You must love competition before you can achieve victory.” – the immortal words of Ryu in Street Fighter, one of the world’s most iconic and beloved games, and now, some forty years since its initial inception, we have ourselves a brand new big-screen adaptation of the game coming to cinemas next summer, and the first teaser traler has been released as part of this week’s Game Awards.
You can watch the trailer below:
The new film stars Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoai as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Eric André as Don Sauvage, With Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson as Balrog, and Jason Momoa as Blanka.
This is the third time the game has been brought to the big-screen: in 1994, writer/director Steven E. DeSouza was the first filmmaker to have a go, directing Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá as General M. Bison and Kylie Minogue as Cammy in cult-classic Street Fighter. The film was a worldwide hit, grossing shy of $100million, and reportedly still brings in “tens of millions” to Capcom every year.
In 2009, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was released, starring Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk in the lead role, but was a critical and commercial bomb, grossing only $12.8million worldwide. There has also been the web series-turned-film Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, released in 2014 and as a film in 2015, to huge fan acclaim.
Synopsis:
Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!
Helmed by director Kitao Sakurai (Twisted Metal), Street Fighter is set to bring the battle from the arcade to the big screen with Hadoukens, roundhouses, and all your favourite characters
