With one unified canon, it was always going to be the case that Disney XD’s new animated series Star Wars Rebels would tie into JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII, giving fans a good reason to pay close attention to anything with the logo – books and comics included.

Though set between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith and Star Wars Episode: IV – A New Hope, Star Wars Rebels is our first real glimpse of how the new Star Wars universe will look and executive producer Simon Kinberg (also writer and producer of X-Men: Days Of Future Past) is keen to talk up the connection.

“It’s a very integrated process” he told Entertainment Weekly, “there’s real communication between all the filmmakers because we’re all part of a larger timeline.

“There is absolutely communication and integration between the different stories. We are very aware of what they’re doing in [EpisodeVII, and we also have to click into place with Episode IV.

“There are characters, vehicles, imagery that are introduced in the show before we’ve ever seen them in the movies, possibly including [EpisodeVII.”

Star Wars Rebels will air 3 October 2014 on Disney XD. For the latest Star Wars: Episode VII news, subscribe to SciFiNow and save 30% off the cover price.
