Star Trek Discovery recruits Crouching Tiger star as first crew member

Has Star Trek Discovery found its lead character? We hope so

Remember that human, female, non-alien crew member that was mooted for new TV series Star Trek Discovery? Well, it appears that her identity may have been confirmed: and it’s none other than Michelle Yeoh.

Speaking in an interview with Coming Soon, former Wrath Of Khan scribe Nicholas Meyer (who is involved in Discovery in some capacity) casually dropped the bombshell, saying “I know Michelle Yeoh is in it.” Woah.

While he stopped short of saying exactly who Yeoh (best known for roles in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sunshine, Tomorrow Never Dies, Babylon AD and more) is playing, we wouldn’t be surprised if she turns out to be the show’s lead. For a start, she fits the aformentioned description. Secondly, she definitely has the credentials, and is someone we could easily picture headlining a TV series.

It’s a welcome piece of news for a show that seems to have hit a number of hitches of late. First there was the revelation that it was being moved up from its original release date of January 2017 to May. Then, there was the slightly annoying news that Bryan Fuller was stepping back from his showrunning duties into more of an executive producing role, to be replaced by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts (nothing against them, but we were looking forward to another Fuller series).

Michelle Yeoh – seen here in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – will appear in Star Trek Discovery.

Still, at least he remains involved in some form. Plus, now we know that someone of the calibre of Yeoh is involved, we can at least be sure that things appear to be heading in the right direction as far as Discovery is concerned.

Star Trek Discovery will premiere on CBS All Access in the US in May 2017, and on Netflix at a later date. For all the latest news from the final frontier, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
