Star Trek Beyond trailer destroys the Enterprise

The crew are in dire straits in the new trailer for Star Trek Beyond

With the film only a couple of months away, it’s surprising that this trailer marks only our second glimpse of Star Trek Beyond – although we have to say, judging by this glimpse we can definitely breathe a little bit easier.

Seeing the crew off the USS Enterprise stranded on a mysterious planet after their flagship is wrecked in spectacular fashion, they must work together to defeat an all-new threat in the form of the formidable Krall (played by Idris Elba, who we see a lot more of here). For the first time the rebooted universe really enters Five-Year Mission territory, and not before time.

Justin Lin takes over in the director’s seat this time, working from a script penned by Simon Pegg, Doug Jung, Roberto Orci, John D Payne and Patrick McKay. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin return to reprise their roles, joined by new faces Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Shohreh Aghdashloo.

And that’s not all. In the above paragraph, we also have the first official poster for Star Trek Beyond, which shows the good ship Enterprise swooping around the main titles, in much better shape than what we see in the actual trailer. While this should suitably whet our appetite for the new Bryan Fuller-helmed TV series on its way to our small screens in 2017, hopefully this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the movie franchise. It feels like we’ve been away for far too long, and frankly we’re happy just to have it back, especially in 50th anniversary year. Live long and prosper.

Star Trek Beyond will be released in cinemas on 22 July 2016. You can download Star Trek: The Complete Manual from GreatDigitalMags.com. For more news about the biggest movies, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
