Star Trek 4 is definitely happening – and it’s bringing someone back!

Part 4 of Abrams-era Star Trek will have a surprise in store

We’ll put it out there: we liked Star Trek Into Darkness. But clearly a lot of people didn’t, especially those who felt that it deviated too far away from the spirit of The Original Series, and to be honest they probably have a point.

With this in mind, Star Trek Beyond had a lot to do to get fans back onside, and in our opinion it succeeded, as evidenced by our highly positive review. The fourth movie, in whatever form it takes, will have a lot to do in order to keep this run going, but it has also done so in the form of this nice little surprise, as revealed by the film’s official tagline:

In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.

Chris Hemsworth will return as George Kirk in Star Trek 4

Yes, Chris Hemsworth is returning as James T Kirk’s father, George Kirk. Having had a short but sweet stint in the opening scene of 2009’s Star Trek, his return will be a treat for fans, who have seen his legacy loom large over his son all the way through this movie arc. We guess this means that time travel will be involved somewhere along the line too – to be honest we can’t think of any other way!

Original director JJ Abrams will be returning to produce the third film alongside Lindsey Weber, with JD Payne and Patrick McKay on scriptwriting duties. It’s unconfirmed whether Justin Lin will return to the director’s chair, or whether the existing cast will reprise their roles, but we’ll bring you all the latest info as we hear it.

Star Trek Beyond will be released in cinemas on 22 July 2016. You can download Star Trek: The Complete Manual from GreatDigitalMags.com now. For all the latest movie news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
