Bong Joon-Ho’s eagerly anticipated sci-fi Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt, premiered to rapturous reviews in Seoul, but is facing drastic cuts from The Weinstein Company.

According to Inside Film (via TwitchFilm), The Weinstein Company is concerned that the film is too slow and complicated, and have asked the director to cut 20 minutes.

They quote film critic and programmer Tony Rayns as reporting “TWC people have told Bong that their aim is to make sure the film ‘will be understood by audiences in Iowa… and Oklahoma.’ Leaving aside the issue of what Weinstein thinks of its audience, it seems to say the least anomalous that the rest of the English-speaking world has to be dragged down to the presumed level of American mid-west hicks.”

Whatever the Weinsteins decide to do to Snowpiercer, which currently runs a not-exactly-daunting 126 minutes, it will affect audiences in North America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the UK,

Snowpiercer does not currently have a UK release date. You can buy Bong Joon-Ho’s The Host on DVD for £3.50 at Amazon.co.uk.
