Those rumblings have proven to be correct, as The Mist and The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont has signed on to direct a prequel to Snow White And The Huntsman.

SlashFilm reports that Darabont has signed on to direct, and that Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron will reprise their roles as The Huntsman and the evil queen Ravenna respectively.

The sequel will be titled The Huntsman, which, along with the casting announcement, seems to confirm that Kristen Stewart will not be returning as Snow White.

“The fantastical world of 2012’s global hit Snow White And The Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of two characters, The Huntsman Eric and Ravenna, intersected before they met Snow White. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in a new epic action-adventure, The Huntsman. Three-time Oscar® nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) directs and wrote the current draft of the screenplay, with earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale from the legendary saga.”

The first film had a strong premise and a good trailer, but it was distinctly underwhelming. With Darabont in the director’s chair and taking a run at the script, and with Hemsworth and the always-brilliant Theron returning, here’s hoping we can look forward to something memorable, and that it’s not just the contractually obliged return of two stars.

The Huntsman is release 22 April 2016. You can buy Snow White And The Huntsman on Blu-ray for £7 at Amazon.co.uk.
