Legendary Entertainment, the company behind Godzilla and Pacific Rim, are working on a Skull Island movie for a 2016 release.

Deadline reports that the production company teased the film yesterday at SDCC, with a glimpse of footage showing everyone’s favourite Skull Island resident: Kong.

Skull Island is, of course, the home of King Kong before he’s rudely uprooted and taken to New York like some kind of circus attraction, as well as plenty of other brilliant, amazing and terrifying creatures.

The official press release states that “Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.”

At present there’s no word on whether the film will tie in with or even acknowledge Peter Jackson’s King Kong, although presumably a cross-over with Godzilla would seem more likely. No director has been announced.

With Legendary’s commitment to Godzilla 2, Pacific Rim 2 and now this, it looks like the next few years are going to be very exciting for fans of monster movies.

Skull Island is due in cinemas 4 November 2014. You can buy Pacific Rim on Blu-ray for £9.99 at Amazon.co.uk.
