Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson took to twitter to finally confirmed his role in Warner Bros’ long-mooted Shazam! movie, based on the DC Comics incarnation of Captain Marvel.
According to Variety, Jack The Giant Slayer and Shrek Ever After writer Darren Lemke is taking on the movie.
Although the character first appear in The Marvel Family #1 (December 1945), Johnson’s reference to Black Adam as an “antihero” backs up suspicions that this version of the character would be inspired by his depiction in Geoff Johns’ Justice Society Of America.
His original (and faintly racist) thief origins were retconned out of the picture – as with his depiction as a straight-up super-douche – and Black Adam was reinvented as the Superman of Ancient Egypt whose version of justice leaned toward the blood and vengeance of the Old Testament.
Proud and uncompromising, in later storylines Black Adam used his powers to overthrow the militaristic regime of his fictional homeland, Khandaq.
Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice will be released on 6 May 2016 – read our defence of Ben Affleck’s casting here and Gal Gadot’s casting here. Find out more about the comics that inspired the film with new digital magazine Uncanny Comics.
