Warner Bros gets the ball rolling on Shazam! but don’t expect to see Dwayne Johnson

Warner Bros is finally getting moving on Shazam! and they’ve confirmed their long-rumoured director.

THR reports that David F Sandberg has been chosen to direct the next superhero movie in Warner Bros’ packed upcoming slate. The director delivered a low-budget horror smash with his feature debut Lights Out, and the buzz for his new movie, Annabelle: Creation, is pretty great. His name has been linked with Shazam! for a while now, and it turns out that the buzz was bang on.

The site also reports that Shazam! will be the next DC superhero movie to get rolling, claiming that the movie is “looking to go before cameras in January or February of next year with a likely release in 2019.”

Meanwhile, Yahoo Movies reports that Dwayne Johnson won’t be making an appearance as Black Adam in the movie. DC’s chief creative officer Geoff Johns stated that “We haven’t announced any casting yet. But Dwayne isn’t going to be in this movie. He’s still doing Black Adam, but he won’t be in Shazam!

So, who will be playing the character? If they are eyeing an early 2018 start date, we should be able to expect casting announcements pretty soon. We do know that Henry Gayden is writing the screenplay.
