Shadowhunters Season 3 has been greenlit by Freeform, oh yeah

The Shadowhunters are returning next year in Season 3

If your Tuesdays have been feeling a little empty since Shadowhunters went on a break, you’re probably already pumped for the second half of the show’s second season, which is set to return on Freeform (and subsequently on Netflix UK) on 5 June 2017.

But it won’t end there; the weirdly addictive fantasy drama has just been greenlit for Season 3, which is due to hit TV screens in 2018. The news was announced in a live Q&A with the cast on the official Shadowhunters Facebook page, which you can watch here:

The decision to renew Shadowhunters isn’t all that surprising. When it first aired at the start of last year it quickly became Freeform’s strongest new scripted entry of 2016. Also, it’s amazing. You can read our review of the first half of Season 2 here.

Fans can expect things to become a lot more tense in the upcoming episodes. According to Deadline, “Shadowhunters and Downworlders are reeling from what happened at the New York Institute in the winter finale. As the rift between the two sides grow larger, the team and their Downworld friends and lovers are put in the middle of the dangerous divide.”

The new season will also bring with it new showrunners following creator Ed Decter stepping down from the role. Instead, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer will run things, with executive producers McG, Michael Reisz, Matt Hastings, Mary Viola, Martin Moszkowicz and Robert Kulzer.

The show is based on the Mortal Instruments book series by Cassandra Clare and stars Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Harry Shum Jr and Isaiah Mustafa.

Shadowhunters Season 2 continues on 5 June. You can stream Seasons 1 and 2A on Netflix UK now. Get all the latest fantasy news with every issue of SciFiNow.
