A&E have ordered a 10 episode first season of Bates Motel, the prequel to Robert Bloch and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror masterpiece Psycho, which is expected to air 2013, bypassing the pilot stage completely.
Developed by Lost showrunner Carlton Cuse and Friday Night Lights‘ Kerry Ehrin, the buzz on t’internet is comparing it to Twin Peaks and Smallville, though no casting details are known.
A&E executive vice-president of programming Dave McKillop said in a joint statement, “It’s a provocative project from two of the best storytellers in the business, and we’re looking forward to getting started.
“Bates Motel will give viewers an intimate understanding of how Norman Bates’ psyche developed from his childhood through his teen years. Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first hand how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged Norman, helping forge the most well-known serial killing motel owner in history.”
