Power Rangers trailer looks a lot like Chronicle

There’s teen angst in abundance in the first Power Rangers trailer

Hot off the back of the new character posters that were recently released, Lionsgate has finally given us a first glimpse of footage from the Power Rangers movie via the first official teaser trailer.

On first impressions… it’s very, very much like Chronicle, what with a group of mismatched teens suddenly discovering something that endows them with unexplainable powers, prompting them to go off and have fun with them, only to discover that they’re in way too deep. So yeah, there are more than a few similarities.

Director Dean Israelite has previously had a handle on teen supernatural-related hijinks via Project Almanac, and it’s looking like he’s sticking to what he knows here. There’s no actual footage of the Rangers in action, nor any glimpse of Bryan Cranston’s Zordon or Bill Hader’s Alpha 5 (although we do get Elizabeth Banks, brilliantly sinister as Rita Repulsa), although we’re sure there’ll be plenty more opportunities to catch them before it’s released next year.

In the meantime, you can read the synopsis and watch the teaser trailer for Power Rangers, directed by Dean Israelite and starring Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Dacre Montgomery, Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston and Bill Hader, below:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers will be released in cinemas on 24 March 2017. For all the latest movie news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
