Power Rangers movie casts Elizabeth Banks as the villain

Elizabeth Banks joins the Power Rangers movie as Rita Repulsa

Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie is gearing up for production, and they’ve landed a pretty impressive baddie.

THR reports that the most excellent Elizabeth Banks has signed on to star as Rita Repulsa, giving the upcoming adaptation a bit of star power.

The star of The Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect will join Rangers actors RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin,Naomi Scott and Dacre Montgomery as the villain, “an alien witch who has designs on the planet.”

This latest take on Power Rangers comes from Project Almanac director Dean Israelite, and is written by Gods Of Egypt and The Last Witch Hunter‘s Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.

Although Banks is obviously a very talented dramatic actor (she was excellent in Love & Mercy), her casting is probably a good indication of the film’s tone. I mean, we’d love a gritty Joseph Kahn Power Rangers movie but a more comedic one does make sense, right?

Power Rangers will be released on 24 March 2017. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
