Pacific Rim 2 likelier than ever thanks to China

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim breaks Warner Bros’ record in Japan, making a sequel more likely

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim may have performed middlingly in the US, but international audiences have lapped it up – especially South Korea and Russia, which both took over twice as much in their opening weekend as the UK, Australia and France.

Opening in China this week, Pacific Rim has taken $9 million which is a new record number for Warner Bros, bringing the full takings so far to $226,446,094  – with over 60% of that being from outside the US.

Overseas success means a level of support for Pacific Rim that lends itself well to a sequel, and director/writer Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have both been tasked to draft a screenplay by Legendary Pictures, but there’s no deal in place as yet – perhaps it all hinges on its opening in the film’s spiritual homeland – Japan.
