Duncan Jones has been talking about his Berlin-set sci-fi Mute since the time of Moon‘s release back in 2009, and his passion project isn’t far away…
Netflix has released three first-look images from the Warcraft and Source Code director’s next film, which stars Paul Rudd, Alexander Skarsgård, Justin Theroux and Seyneb Saleh, and which he co-wrote with Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes, Pompeii). The press release describes it as Jones returning “to his creative roots,” which hopefully means a great sci-fi film with brilliant performances and a grounded, fully realised genre universe.
“Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wisecracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.”
Although we weren’t big fans of Warcraft ourselves (read our review here), we are huge fans of Moon and Source Code, and this sounds like it could be something really special. And, frankly, there’s just not enough Casablanca-esque sci-fi films set in Berlin, we need more of those. We’re also excited to see Rudd take on something a bit darker after his (admittedly wonderful) lighter turns as Scott Lang in the Marvel Universe, and we’re obviously fascinated by Justin Theroux’s wig (assuming it’s a wig, sorry if it’s not, Justin).
Mute also stars Noel Clarke, Florence Kasumba and Daniel Fathers, and the awesome Clint Mansell will be providing the soundtrack. Oh, and Sam Rockwell is rumoured to be making an appearance as Moon‘s Sam Bell, but that hasn’t been confirmed…
There is currently no exact release date for the film but it will be available on Netflix in 2017.
