He was rumoured along with The Dark Knight Rises‘ ubiquitous Joseph Gordon-Levitt back in October 2013, but according to Variety, Anchorman star Paul Rudd has leapt to the head of the pack and is in negotiations for the title role in Ant-Man.

The Marvel Phase 3 film is set to be directed by Scott Pilgrim and Cornetto Trilogy helmer Edgar Wright, with a script from Attack The Block‘s Joe Cornish.

Rudd’s casting definitely has more of a Robert Downey Jr rogue charm than the traditional square-jawed superhero, which could works for whichever incarnation of Ant-Man they’re looking to bring to screen – either misguided original inventor Hank Pym and the more selfish Scott Lang, who steals the Ant-Man technology and becomes the second Ant-Man. Both have been rumoured at one time or another.

Ant-Man will be released on 31 July 2015. Pick up Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs The WorldShaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz as one Blu-ray box-set for £16 or on DVD for £18.75 from Amazon.co.uk
