Man Of Tomorrow: James Gunn casts Brainiac

James Gunn has revealed who will play Superman’s enemy in Man Of Tomorrow….

It’s been three months since James Gunn announced that the next Superman movie will be named Man Of Tomorrow, and that we’ll get our greedy eyes on it in July 2027 and now Gunn has revealed who will play Brainiac in that film.

Though we have no further information on what Man Of Tomorrow will be about (apart from the image that Gunn shared with the announcement, which apparently sees Superman and Lex Luthor teaming up!), we can probably safely assume that this will be a sequel to the 2025 movie starring David Corenswet as Supes and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The character of Brainiac fits perfectly with this new slew of Supe movies. The character was first created back in 1958 and Superman 2025 was partly inspired by the Silver Age of comics, as Gunn mentioned earlier this year: “I love the Silver Age of Comics in terms of the aesthetics of it, but it isn’t completely that,” he said. “It’s taking the character of Superman and really getting into who he is as an individual and what his personal obstacles are in this film. That’s a really big difference from not only other Superman movies, but other superhero films.”

Brainiac first appeared in Action Comics #242 and was created by Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, and is usually depicted as a superintelligent android who is obsessed with collecting all knowledge in the known universe.

Gunn has confirmed on social media that Brainiac in Man Of Tomorrow will be played by German actor Lars Eidinger (Clouds Of Sils Maria) saying: “In our worldwide search for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars.”

This, of course, all comes just over a week after the DCU revealed the new Supergirl trailer, which is set to be released next year, which is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s acclaimed graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and stars Milly Alcock as Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El.

“It was something that I was very interested in making before we even took over DC studios,” Gunn said of Supergirl. “I remember when the graphic novel first came out, when Peter and I were talking about taking over DC, but hadn’t decided yet, I called Peter and I told him how great it was, what an interesting take it was on Supergirl. And I said, you know who would be great? I didn’t know [Milly’s] name. I said ‘That little girl in House of the Dragon would be great, because it’s sort of a rock and roll Supergirl. Then Milly, of course, had auditioned with hundreds of other people, and she got the role.”
