Live-action GITS moves forward

Screenwriter assigned to big-screen adaptation.

ghost_in_the_shell_f.jpgGhost In The Shell, widely regarded as seminal in the cyberpunk and anime genres of film, is to be turned into a 3D live action feature by DreamWorks.

Laeta Kalogridis will be writing the screenplay for the film, which will also have Avi and Ari Arad attached to produce. Kalogridis’s past scripts include Night Watch, Alexander and Pathfinder, as well as Shutter Island, which will be released in February 2010. She has also worked on Birds Of Prey and Bionic Woman in television as an executive producer. There is no news yet on casting.

Ghost In The Shell follows Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg attached to a Special Forces division of the police that specialises in technology-related crimes. The series is best known for its 1995 animated film, based off the original manga series by Masamune Shirow. There have been a number of television series and sequels since then, and the film is often cited as a major influence on the Matrix series of films.
