Legends Of Tomorrow: Vandal Savage “wants to teach humanity a lesson”

Actor Casper Crump on Vandal Savage’s masterplan in Legends Of Tomorrow

Having first shown up in Arrow as 6000-year-old immortal Vandal Savage, Danish actor Casper Crump is now taking centre stage in Legends Of Tomorrow, where the full extent of his megalomania is being revealed. Still, as he tells us, his motivations mean he’s more than just your average villain.

“The thing about Vandal Savage as a villain,” proposes Crump, “is he’s a bit different from other villains who want something. They usually want a nuclear weapon or a lot of money, but Vandal, in my opinion, sometimes just wants to teach humanity a lesson. If he sees a great challenge, he’ll just be up for it. If nothing happens for a time, he’ll just kick back for 30 years, chill out and not do anything.”

While his primary aim in Arrow and The Flash appeared to be terrorising the duo of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, this time his goals are far more grandiose.

“His thing, of course, is world domination. That’s just the way it goes when you have all the time in the world, I guess. He’s real. He’s not laughing, ’I want a lot of money, I want all the weapons in the world,’ even though that’s what he ends up getting. On the way there, he’s really looking for a challenge. He wants to teach humanity, he want to put things in perspective.

“This might be a little controversial, but he’s inspiring as well. I was looking at the news, and see him as a modern politician sometimes. He really thinks he’s doing all the things right for the people, and of course he’s not. But then suddenly all of these people are coming towards him, and he doesn’t understand it at all. That’s how I view him.”

Legends Of Tomorrow will air from Sky1 in the UK from 3 March 2016. For more news about the biggest TV shows, pick up the latest issue of SciFiNow.
