Joss Whedon S.H.I.E.L.D TV series announced, separate from The Avengers 2

Avengers Assemble 2 is coming in 2015. Until then, Joss Whedon will co-write (and possibly direct) the pilot for an ‘autonomous’ S.H.I.E.L.D TV series.

The details of the Joss Whedon-produced, Avengers-branded TV series have been revealed – and it’s an hour-long drama based on Avengers organisation S.H.I.E.L.D. Whedon, along with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen (who both worked on Dollhouse) will co-write the pilot, with the Avengers Assemble director also given the option to direct if time permits. At a Q&A reported by Variety, Whedon described the series as ‘autonomous’, which makes sense given you wouldn’t expect movie stars to turn up every week. Deadline reports that the project has actually been in progress for some time; this is just the first time details have made it out there.

Also of note for Whedon alumni obsessives: Angel executive producer Jeffrey Bell will be working on the show, as well as Buffy Season 8 writer Jeph Loeb. Expect to see S.H.I.E.L.D debut next season on ABC – we can’t see this one not getting an instant series order. Excited by the prospect of a new Whedon TV drama? Let us know below!
