Joker and Harley Quinn movie is on the way with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie

Crazy Stupid Love filmmakers will write and direct a Joker and Harley Quinn film

Hot on the heels of the news that Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese are working on a standalone Joker origin film, it’s been revealed that Warner Bros will be re-teaming Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn for their own movie.

THR reports that Crazy Stupid Love and This Is Us duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are in final negotiations to write and direct “a criminal love story” headlining the two characters. While the Phillips movie apparently won’t star Leto as the Clown Prince Of Crime, this will bring the actor back into the purple jacket and face tattoos that we saw in Suicide Squad.

Speaking of Suicide Squad, a sequel to David Ayer’s bad guy team-up is still Warner Bros’ number one priority (although they still haven’t announced a director after reported favourite Jaume Collet-Serra decided not to sign on), and it looks like the Joker-Harley movie will get going after that, with the studio working fast to make sure the actors’ contracts all work out.

As for what we can expect from this, THR’s insider described the pitch as “an insane and twisted love story. When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine.”

It’s unclear exactly what this news means for David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens, which is reportedly still in development with Robbie acting as executive producer. The film was conspicuous by its absence on the upcoming slate that Warner Bros and DC unveiled at Comic-Con, although Ayer seemed to reaffirm his involvement on Twitter shortly afterwards. We’ll have to wait and see…
