John Carpenter confirms new Halloween director and writer

David Gordon Green and Danny McBride join John Carpenter’s new Halloween

We didn’t expect to hear these two names attached to the upcoming Halloween movie, but we’re pretty excited about.

Last night John Carpenter took to his Facebook page to announce that a writer and director had finally been found for the latest return to Haddonfield that he has been working on with Jason Blum: David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. What’s more, it will be released on 19 October 2018.

Also, Carpenter says he might do the music. For the love of God, John…please do the music. We all need a new Carpenter soundtrack.

Green is the unpredictable but frequently brilliant director behind indie films like George Washington, All The Real Girls and Prince Avalanche and stoner comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness. He was also attached to direct that Suspiria remake for ages before that all fell apart (of course, it’s just finished filming under director Luca Guadagnino).

McBride has collaborated with Green since their early days, from student filmmaking to his TV shows like Eastbound And Down and Vice Principals. He’s often spoken about his love of the genre (and if you’ve seen Eastbound And Down, you’ll know that shit gets horror-dark) and he’ll soon be seen in Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant.

The rumours about who will direct this new Halloween (we don’t know if it’s a sequel, a reboot or what) have been swirling around for a while, with Oculus‘ Mike Flanagan and The Guest‘s Adam Wingard’s names in contention, but we like that this choice means that we simply don’t know what it’s going to be like. We’ve had the grungy grimness of Rob Zombie’s reboot. We’ve had seven straightforward slasher films of varying quality and one brilliant occult chiller (Season Of The Witch is a masterpiece, dammit). We’re ready for something different. But, y’know, if they want to make a really great slasher movie, we’d be fine with that too.

Here’s Carpenter’s quote from his Facebook page:

“So you say you want a Revolution?
You want to shake things up and bring back Halloween and make it rock again?

Well so do I.

So here’s the announcement you’ve all been waiting for:

David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are joining the project to complete the creative team. David and Danny will write the script together and David will direct. I will continue in my executive producer role to consult and offer my advice and feedback as needed.

David and Danny both came to my office recently with Jason Blum and shared their vision for the new movie and…WOW. They get it. I think you’re gonna dig it. They blew me away.

I might even do the music. Maybe. It could be kind of cool.

And you’ll get to see it in theaters on October 19th, 2018.”
