James Cameron is making Avatar 2, 3 4 and 5. Yep

All those Avatar sequels are definitely still happening apparently

It seems like forever that James Cameron has been threatening to follow-up his mega-mega-mega blockbuster success story Avatar with a whole medley of sequels, and he recently reiterated to do so, in case we’d somehow forgotten. Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the director took to the stage to confirm that no less than 4 sequels are in the works – one more than he had previously announced.

“I’ve been working with the top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of Avatar going forward. The environments, new cultures, whatever it takes to life.” he said at the event. “From what I’m seeing the art on the wall, in pure imagination is just beyond the first film. I’m speechless.”

As much as we’d love to see a return to Pandora (no really, we would), all these announcements have meant any news regarding sequels have generally caused us to recline back in our armchairs and stroke our chins while musing, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” It has now been 7 years since Avatar, and while we appreciate that reinventing the wheel once more generally takes some time, we can’t be the only ones hoping to see something to.

Cameron previously spoke of his desire to explore much more of Pandora’s world – the oceans in particular coming in for attention – and we’d generally like to see this. He clearly has a much bigger story mapped out, and it’s always nice to see creators’ visions reach fruition.

As it is, the films are reportedly being shot concurrently, due for release in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023 respectively. Although how many sequels there’ll be by this point is anyone’s guess…
