Robert Downey Jr is set to reprise his role as Tony Stark in Iron Man 3.

The Town‘s Rebecca Hall is in talks, according to Variety, to play a super-scientist in Iron Man 3, which is due in cinemas 3 May 2013, and is the first solo Marvel movie after Avengers Assemble.

The role, previously occupied by Take Shelter‘s Jessica Chastain, could be that of Dr Maya Hansen, who’s responsible for the nano-technology that forms the core of the Iron Man: Extremis storyline Shane Black’s Iron Man threequel is reportedly based on.

Chastain announced her withdrawal from the role, saying, “Iron Man 3 isn’t going to work out. My schedule is jammed packed and I can’t fit anything else in.

“The press announced my possible attachment far too soon. I know many of you wanted me to be involved, and I’m so sorry to disappoint you. Hopefully there’ll be another Marvel film in my future. Shane Black and everyone on the Iron Man 3 team are really wonderful. I’m very excited to see the film when it comes out.”
