We’ve not heard much about the film adaptation of Joe Kelly and JM Ken Niimura’s graphic novel I Kill Giants since it cast Zoe Saldana and The Conjuring 2′s Madison Wolfe last year, but now another excellent name has been added to the cast.
Variety reports that Imogen Poots has signed on to the project in an unnamed role, which comes from first time director Anders Walter, while Kelly has written the screenplay. The film starts shooting in Belgium and Ireland towards the end of the month.
“I Kill Giants tells the story of Barbara Thorson, an acerbic fifth-grader so consumed with fantasy that she doesn’t just tell people that she kills giants with an ancient Norse warhammer – she starts to believe it herself. The reasons for Barbara’s troubled behavior are revealed through the course of the book, as she learns to reconcile her fantasy life with the real world.”
Saldana will play the kindly school psychologist Mrs. Mollé, while Wolfe (who was superb as the possessed-or-is-she Janet Hodgson in The Conjuring 2) takes the lead role as Barbara. Poots recently starred in Cameron Crowe’s TV series Roadies and Lonely Island comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and was absolutely superb as the take-no-prisoners Amber in Jeremy Saulnier’s gripping siege horror Green Room.
I Kill Giants won the International Manga Award in 2012 and the Gaiman award in 2013, and there’ll be a lot of people who will be anxiously waiting to see if the film version can do it justice. We’re definitely impressed with the cast so far, so…fingers crossed.
