Following the recent death of Philip Seymour Hoffman (on 2 February 2014) with one scene left unfilmed in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, the studio have decided to recreate the actor digitally to “honour” the actor.
An insider told The Hollywood Reporter, “You can do digital things, you can have conversations where you’re not focusing on him but the people he’s talking to.”
It’s difficult not to think the whole thing is going to be incredibly tacky, after all this isn’t the first time a star has been digitally recreated posthumously and rarely has it been anything other than clunky.
At best it could look graceless, and at worst, downright offensive. Only time will tell, and The Hunger Games franchise doesn’t exactly have the best record when it comes to visual effects:
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is released on 21 November 2014. You can buy The Hunger Games on DVD for £7 at Amazon.co.uk.
