Hulu turning North American Lake Monsters into a horror anthology series

Hulu is working on a horror anthology series of North American Lake Monsters

Following Into The Dark and Castle Rock, Hulu is going hard on the horror anthology series. The US streamer has reportedly picked up a brand new one based on Nathan Ballingrud’s North American Lake Monsters.

The project is currently untitled but is hailing from Preacher and The Neon Demon‘s Mary Laws. Laws created the series and is on board as a writer and executive producer. Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari will also executive producer, and Anvari will direct.

The first season of the series will be made up of eight episodes and was inspired by Ballingrud’s collection of short stories.

If you don’t know much about North American Lake Monsters, here’s the Amazon synopsis for the book:

Nathan Ballingrud’s Shirley Jackson Award winning debut collection is a shattering and luminous experience not to be missed by those who love to explore the darker parts of the human psyche. Monsters, real and imagined, external and internal, are the subject. They are us and we are them and Ballingrud’s intense focus makes these stories incredibly intense and irresistible.

These are love stories. And also monster stories. Sometimes these are monsters in their traditional guises, sometimes they wear the faces of parents, lovers, or ourselves. The often working-class people in these stories are driven to extremes by love. Sometimes, they are ruined; sometimes redeemed. All are faced with the loneliest corners of themselves and strive to find an escape.
