Hello possums! Dame Edna joins the Hobbit cast

Barry Humphries to play the Goblin King in the Tolkein prequel

Australian actor and comedian Barry Humphries, best known for his outrageous stage persona of Dame Edna Everage, has been added to the cast of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, taking on the role of the Goblin King.

Also added to the cast is Lost‘s Evangeline Lilly who is set to play an elf called Tauriel who, as you’re doubtless aware, doesn’t appear in the book. Peter Jackson commented, “Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.”
