Has the Aquaman movie cast its Mera?

Zombieland star eyed up for love interest role in Aquaman

With Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice fast approaching and Suicide Squad not far behind it, it’s inevitable that there has been a lot less focus on the solo movies following them, with it being particularly quiet on the Aquaman front. Now, however, there appears to be something of note to report, with Amber Heard apparently being locked in negotiations to star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Heard (Zombieland, The Ward) is in talks to play Mera, the primary love interest of Aquaman (played here by Jason Momoa) in the comics – albeit with a dark side, with various storylines having seen her come into conflict with Arthur Curry over the years as the character embraces her dark side. As with most of the characters in the DC universe, her origin has been substantially revised and altered over the years, so there are a number of different paths for them to choose to take. Regardless of which take on the character they pick, one consistent is that Mera has remained a pretty formidable character (even briefly joining the Justice League in the ‘Blackest Night’ storyline), so don’t expect her to be defined purely by the moniker ‘love interest’. And with Heard managing to be kick-ass in pretty much every role she lends her name to, she looks like a great choice.

Apparently, the role may also involve a cameo in Batman V Superman, thus further underlining DC and Warner Bros’ commitment to establishing the shared movie universe that Man Of Steel sowed the seeds for. James Wan (Fast And Furious) will direct, with David Johnson (The Conjuring 2), Paul Morris (Young Justice) and Mort Weisinger (Arrow) on scriptwriting duties.

Aquaman will be released on 27 July 2018. You can find out more about the characters and the comics that inspired them by picking up the latest edition of 100 All-Time Greatest Comics.
