Han Solo movie finds its Lando Calrissian

Star Wars’ Han Solo movie has finally cast a young Lando

While this was rumoured a while back, it’s still brilliant that is has come to pass. Yes, Donald Glover will be the gambling, card-playing scoundrel Lando Calrissian alongside Alden Ehrenreich’s protagonist in the upcoming Han Solo movie to spin out of the Star Wars universe.

Having shot to fame in Dan Harmon’s brilliant TV series Community, he has since impressed in brief roles in The Martian as Girls, as well as starring in current TV hit Atlanta, and is definitely someone we can see in the role.

Indeed, as the official press release says, “this new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld—years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return Of The Jedi.”

While we kind of assumed that Lando will be in this film, it’s nice to see that Star Wars‘ custodians are thinking of him, especially considering his no-show in The Force Awakens. Moreover, in Glover they couldn’t possibly have found a better fit for the role: talented, funny and possessing charisma in abundance, they’ve definitely struck casting gold. His directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, clearly agree. “We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller in the same press release. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologise to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

The Han Solo movie will be released in cinemas on 25 May 2018. You can download Star Wars: Expanded Universe – The Complete Manual from GreatDigitalMags.com, and watch our video review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens now. For all the latest Star Wars news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
