Guillermo del Toro is a man who has about seventeen projects on the go at any one time, but his actual next film has just been confirmed: it’s a Cold War love story.
Deadline reports that it’s untitled, that it’s a drama, and that it’s “described as a mysterious and magical other-worldly love story set in 1963 America.”
Something that we can get excited about is that the great Sally Hawkins (Submarine, Happy Go Lucky, Godzilla, Paddington, Blue Jasmine…) is confirmed to star, which would pretty much guarantee excellence even without the del Toro factor.
The most excellent Octavia Spencer (Snowpiercer, The Help, Smashed) is also in talks to star, which is another point for the “we absolutely can’t wait for this” column.
Del Toro has also written the script, and tweeted yesterday that
The Searchlight movie is shaping up nicely. Start as planned in mid-August.

Other films on his stacked slate include the Fantastic Voyage remake produced by James Cameron, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark based on Alvin Schwartz’s books, The Haunted Mansion which may or may not star Ryan Gosling…and the million and one things on his IMDB In Development list that may or may not be accurate. Oh, and his Netflix series Trollhunters. He’s also producing, but not directing, Pacific Rim 2, which is being helmed by Daredevil‘s Steven S DeKnight.
And while we’re here, can we just urge everyone to watch, or indeed rewatch, Crimson Peak? That film’s box-office failure was a travesty. A damn travesty. It’s a beautiful treasure of a film. Don’t be like all those people who didn’t watch it. Treat yourself to some perfectly cast Gothic romance goodness. You deserve it.
Crimson Peak is available on Blu-ray for £13 at Amazon.co.uk. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
