Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller revealed that Batman’s most infamous foe will eventually be making an appearance in the TV origin story, citing Brian Bollard and Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke as an inspiration.

“He’s the crown jewel of the Batman villains,” confirmed Heller. “He will be brought in with great care and a lot of thought.”

This will be the first time the character has appeared in live action since the late Heath Ledger’s award-winning turn in The Dark Knight.

“That was a wonderful performance and — apart from everything else — wonderful make-up,” he agrees. “And we should try to live up to that. It will be a different character. It’s certainly going to be more Heath Ledger than Cesar Romero.”

Gotham begins this autumn on Fox in the US. No UK air date has been announced. You can buy Batman: Year One for £7.69 at Amazon.co.uk and find out more about the comics that inspired the show with new digital magazine Uncanny Comics.
