Gotham Season 3 casts Walking Dead star as Mad Hatter

Another member of Batman’s rogues gallery has joined Gotham

It seems that you can never have too many villains, especially where Gotham is concerned – indeed, the identity of another one has just been revealed. Having had his presence confirmed earlier on, we can now reveal that Benedict Samuel will play Jervis Tetch, aka the Mad Hatter, in Gotham Season 3.

The official press release describes him as follows:

DC villain Jervis Tetch is a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her.

So like many of DC’s other villains, this take on the Mad Hatter has a different side and an ulterior motive, rather than being the out-and-out adversary he is in the comics. Still, the overtly Lewis Carroll-esque overtones suggest that he will retain his comic-book edge, so we’ll see on that one.

As for the actor playing him, you’ll most likely recognise Samuel if you watched Season 6 of The Walking Dead, in which he played one of the main members of the ‘Wolf’ gang who attempted to invade Alexandria. Despite being unrepentently a bad guy, he also displayed a strangely ambigous altruistic side in his dealings with characters like Denise and Morgan, to the extent where it was almost a shame when he eventually got offed. Hopefully he’ll be able to bring more of his ability to display unexpected pathos to Gotham.

Gotham Season 3 will air on Fox from 23 September 2016, with a UK air date and network to be announced. You can download The 25 Greatest DC Comics Ever digital edition from GreatDigitalMags.com now. For all the latest TV news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
