According to Deadline, Dexter and Law & Order‘s David Zayas has joined the cast of Fox’s Gotham as organised crime kingpin Sal Maroni.

In the comics – particularly Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s Batman: The Long Halloween – Maroni is second to only Carmine Falcone in the Falcone crime family, and was responsible for splashing district attorney Harvey Dent with acid, causing his descent into Two-Face.

With Dent established as an older character on par with Ben MacKenzie’s Gordon, it’s not unlikely that we’ll see the Two-Face origin story play out in the show – sans Batman, obviously.

Though his role was different, Maroni was played by Eric Roberts to suitably villainous effect in The Dark Knight.

Gotham begins this autumn on Fox in the US. No UK air date has been announced. You can buy Batman: Year One for £7.69 at Amazon.co.uk and find out more about the comics that inspired the show with new digital magazine Uncanny Comics.
