Godzilla 2 starts filming, confirms monsters in first plot synopsis

A couple of details finally slip out from Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

We’ve had a whole load of casting announcements but Warner Bros and Legendary have been pretty cagey when it comes to telling us what the Godzilla sequel will actually be about.

Now, a press release has been issued which announces that Michael Dougherty’s megabudget monster mash has started shooting, and it comes with a plot synopsis that confirms which of the classic Toho monsters will be taking a swing at the big guy.

Business Wire reports that “The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”

There’s also the full list of the humans we can expect to see in the film, which includes returning Godzilla cast members Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins as well as Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds and Zhang Ziyi.

One thing that is interesting (or maybe not, depending on whether anything comes of it) is that the press release doesn’t use the title King Of The Monsters, which Legendary had previously confirmed.

Shooting is currently taking place in Atlanta, as horror veteran Dougherty (Krampus, Trick R Treat) directs from the script he wrote with Zach Shields. Adam Wingard (The Guest, You’re Next) was recently confirmed as the director for Godzilla Vs Kong, which will be released in 2020 and will pit the two creatures against each other.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters will be released in cinemas on 22 March 2019. For all the latest movie news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
