Ghost In The Shell remake confirms whitewashing

The live-action Ghost In The Shell movie has gone big and white with its casting

Ghost In The Shell movieThe long-mooted Ghost In The Shell live-action movie has confirmed that Scarlett Johansson will star in the lead.

Variety reports that the Avengers star will take the lead role in Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White And The Huntsman) adaptation of the classic anime directed by Mamoru Oshii, having finally accepted the offer which was reported back in October.

She’ll be playing Major Matoko Kusanagi in the story about “the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.”

The Variety report notes that the film was only going to get made with A-lister clout, despite the support of Steven Spielberg. We’re huge fans of Johansson and she’s not put a foot wrong in ages, and we love Ghost In The Shell, but was this really the only way to get this film made?

You can buy Ghost in The Shell on Blu-ray for £27.99 at Amazon.co.uk. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
