Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner has joined the cast of Mary Shelley’s Monster, and will be playing the title role.

The film, directed by Coky Giedroyc (Penny Dreadful, The Killing), will be based on the Frankenstein author’s life while she wrote her iconic novel and battled her own monstrous alter-ego. It will also star Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as Shelley’s husband Percy and Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story) as her step-sister Claire Clairmont.

Producer Rose Ganguzza described Mary Shelley’s Monster as “the story of the most extraordinary 19th century teenage heroine told in a visceral, sexy, contemporary way”.

“Our film is not a period drama,” Ganguzza told Deadline. “It is a story of youth that transcends time, a gothic romance, a love triangle that involves a dark passenger, and we are tremendously excited to have such an exciting cast on board this wonderful project.”

Perhaps not a stark change for Turner after Game Of Thrones, but exploring Shelley’s alter-ego could give her a chance to resurrect her acting chops.

Game Of Thrones returns to HBO and Sky Atlantic early 2015. You can buy Game Of Thrones Seasons 1-3 on Blu-ray for £55 at Amazon.co.uk.
