First look: M Night Shyamalan’s Devil

Satan, lend me a lift.

The Last Airbender may have bombed with the efficacy of a 500lb bomb, but M Night Shyamalan hasn’t quite Major Kong’d his way out of grace just yet. The latest film from his pen, directed by Drew and John Erick Dowdle, is Devil, a film about a group of people trapped in an elevator with the titular figure among them.

I’m not of the opinion that Shyamalan doesn’t have a good film in him any more. Lady In The Water and The Happening were rubbish, of course, and I haven’t seen The Last Airbender yet, but I liked the rest of his output. This concept appeals to me too, a tight, contained story that focuses on atmosphere and shocks rather than out-and-out action. Indeed, it’s exactly the kind of film that Shyamalan needs to rebuild the public’s confidence in him – a little restraint goes a long way.
