The first pictures from M Night Shyamalan’s (The Village, The Sixth Sense) live-action adaptation of the popular anime series Avatar: The Last Airbender, have been circulating around the internet over the last few hours, and are presented below.
The Last Airbender’s story revolves around a world where people have control over a certain element, and those who wield the power of fire are engaged in a war with the three other nations. Avatar has the power over all, and the ability to unite his fragmented. Avatar will be played by the 12-year-old actor Noah Ringer, a Texas native who also holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and landed the part after sending in a tape of him practicing his martial arts to the filmmakers. Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel, also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, takes on the role of the antagonist Zuko.
The Last Airbender is expected to have a release on 2 July 2010. M Night Shyamalan’s previous releases include the critically-lambasted The Happening, and the poorly-received Lady In The Water. The pictures below were originally released by USA Today.
