Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them casting news klaxon! It was revealed on Pottermore today that Jude Law has officially been cast as a younger version of Albus Dumbledore. Law is set to make his first Wizarding World appearance in the Fantastic Beasts sequel.
As the Fantastic Beasts films take place decades before the Harry Potter series, Law will be playing the future Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry headmaster, Supreme Mugwump and Chief Warlock of the Wizardgamot while he was still in his prime (for a wizard, anyway).
When we join young Dumbledore in the film, he will be occupying the post of Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts.
The film also takes place after Dumbledore and his ex-friend, colleague and love interest Gellert Grindelwald’s duel that killed Ariana Dumbledore, so we’re presuming we’ll also get to see a darker side of the wizard while he hunts down Grindelwald.
Dumbledore’s inclusion in the Fantastic Beasts series was teased in the first film, when it was revealed that he was the only Hogwarts teacher to argue against protagonist Newt Scamander’s expulsion after he caused an incident involving some kind of magical creature.
Speaking of Law’s casting, director David Yates said: “Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I’ve long admired and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him.
“I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”
President and chief content officer of Warner Bros Pictures Toby Emmerich added: “As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the Fantastic Beasts cast, playing a character so universally adored. Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros family for years and we’re excited to embark on this new adventure with him.”
