Empress will be Mark Millar’s next comic-book movie

Mark Millar’s Empress has a writer and producers on board

Following in the footsteps of Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service and more, yet another Mark Millar comic book is making its way to the big screen. Those waiting for a Nemesis movie will have to wait, however. This time it’s the turn of Empress, the first issue of which was released in April to widespread acclaim and buzz, selling out its first issue.

Drawn by Stuart Immomen, the story itself primarily concerns with the wife of an evil galactic dictator who decides to leave her husband, taking her three young children along with her. As you would expect, this doesn’t exactly go well, with her husband subsequently using the huge armies at his disposal to hunt her down.

Millar will partner up with producers Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum (who also worked on Millar’s Wanted), with F Scott Frazier (xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage) penning the script.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Kirschenbaum said of the upcoming adaptation, “Nobody creates universes that translate into big movie ideas better than Millar… With Empress, he’s raised the bar yet again. Part Star Wars, part Guardians Of The Galaxy and part something wholly fresh that only the amazing brain of Millar could spawn.”

For his part, Millar added: “In terms of pure concept, this is the most ambitious story I’ve ever come up with, so it needed the most experienced producers I’ve ever been in business with. Joe Roth is a genuine Hollywood legend and Jeff Kirschenbaum was part of the team that broke every record in the book at Universal last year. Even being on the same poster as these two guys is exciting to me.”

Empress issue #2 will be available to buy from all good comic-book stores from 6 May 2016. For more news about the biggest movies, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
