Doctor Strange movie adds Boardwalk Empire star

Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange movie has founds its Nicodemus West

It’s hard to see how the cast for Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange movie could get much better. Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are already confirmed, with various more rumoured. Now, the latest name has been confirmed: Boardwalk Empire and A Serious Man star Michael Stuhlbarg.

Initially broken by The Hollywood Reporter, other sources report that Stuhlbarg will be playing Nicodemus West, who in the comics is a fellow surgeon and long-time admirer of Strange’s. Most significantly, he is the one who operates on the soon-to-be-Sorcerer in order to save his hands, as well as journeying to Kamar-Taj to train at the same location as Strange (although his mystic arts aren’t so well developed).

This origin story potentially leaves him open to be friend or antagonist (or possibly a mixture of both). Regardless, the casting of Stuhlbarg is a great choice, and one we’re sure he’ll own whatever kind of role he gets.

Doctor Strange will be released in cinemas on 28 October 2016. You can find out more about the characters and the comics that inspired them by picking up the latest edition of 100 All-Time Greatest Comics.
