Work on the second film in the Divergent series, Insurgent, is still underway but there has already been news about who will be directing the final instalment.

In an exclusive interview with SciFiNow, the tetralogy’s producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher confirmed that Insurgent director Robert Schwentke will be returning to work on Allegiant Part 2.

Schwentke joined the Divergent Series last year after the first film’s director, Neil Burger, departed the project.

“Neil did a really wonderful job of establishing the world, making it credible and creating real humans in that story,” producer Wick told us.

“Now we have a heroine who has been through the death of her parents and killing a friend, and is wracked by grief and the world around her is crumbling. Robert immediately latched onto those opportunities. The first thing he brought was a real fascination with… what it’s like to be paralysed by trauma and by grief and how you recover from that. So he was really fascinated by the psychology of Tris (Shailene Woodley) and how she could find her power again, and then secondly how we could dramatise that.”

On being asked about the thinking behind the decision to split Allegiant into two parts, Wick said it was because there was so much of author Veronica Roth’s story they wanted to cover.

“We wanted as much as these actors as we could get,” he said. “As we talked about it, we happened to find the ideas for two movies that we liked. There’s a whole new world we’ve opened up. We just felt there were two great movies to be made.”

Divergent: Insurgent will be released 20 March 2015 in the UK. You can buy Divergent on Blu-ray for £9.99 from Amazon.co.uk. Keep up with the latest YA movie news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
