Damon Lindelof’s adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel The Leftovers has cast Justin Theroux in the male lead.

Lindelof has written the pilot for HBO based on Perrotta’s novel in which most of humanity disappears overnight. Theroux will play the town’s leader, who attempts to keep order among those who remain in the wake of ‘The Sudden Departure’.

It’s the first time Lindelof has returned to TV since Lost, having written Prometheus, Cowboys & Aliens and Star Trek Into Darkness. Theroux has starred in films like Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, American Psycho and Your Highness, as well as co-writing Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2.
