“Star Trek: Countdown lays the groundwork for what happens in the movie,” said Roberto Orci, the screenwriter for the film who plotted the series with long-time collaborator Alex Kurtzman. “It’s our way of passing the baton from the Next Generation characters and their movies to the new film.”

The series will be written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones, with art from David Messina. The latest Star Trek film hits cinemas in May 2009.
