Collateral Beauty trailer Will Smith meets Death, Time and Love

Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley and Edward Norton star in Collateral Beauty

Fresh from being the best thing about Suicide Squad, Will Smith is now leading a ridiculous all-star cast in fantasy drama Collateral Beauty, which has just released its trailer.

Yes, that cast includes Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Edward Norton, Michael Pena, Naomie Harris and Jacob Latimer. Yeah. Smith isn’t kidding when he tells EW that it’s “like a small-movie superhero cast: The Avengers of a Christmas dramedy!”

He’s very, very cagey on the plot details in that interview, but from the trailer we can tell that it’s a magical, fantastical look at grief. Smith plays a grieving man who writes letters to Death, Time and Love, only to have them appear in his life to respond to his questions. It looks as though there’s a bit of Neil Gaiman to it, as well as classic Christmas tales like A Christmas Carol and, of course, Scrooged.

The film is directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Hope Springs) and written by Allan Loeb (The Dilemma, Just Go With It, So Undercover). Will it justify that ludicrous cast? Or will it be a star studded seasonal turkey (sorry, sorry)? Either way, it’s going up against a little film called Rogue One, and Smith does seem to be aware of what that could mean.

“Uh, yes,” he told EW. “They call that counter programming…I call it getting smashed on Christmas.”

Collateral Beauty will be released on 16 December in the US and 30 December in the UK. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
