Colin Farrell Talks The Batman: Part II And “In Limbo” Sgt. Rock

The Penguin star has been talking about the “extraordinary” sequel script and the other DC film he was due to star in.

The Batman star Colin Farrell has perhaps been the busiest actor working in the last few years, with a cavalcade of work coming down the pipe from the Irishman, with his latest film, Ballad of a Small Player, releasing on Netflix this week ahead of a potential awards season run.

But while chatting about the new film he has coming out, the conversation naturally turned to his future as part of the DCU, not least in The Batman: Part II and the currently in limbo adaptation of Sgt. Rock. Director Luca Guadagnino (A Quiet Place, After the Hunt) was set to direct the film with Farrell in the lead role, but earlier this year, the project stalled and was put on the back burner, leading to Guadagnino’s departure. DC head honcho James Gunn says the film is still moving forward, but so far, the film is stuck in development.

Farrell spoke about the film on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and while he praised the script, he is in the dark on what the future holds for the project, with no new release date as of yet confirmed, saying:

“I know nothing about it, brother. I was going to do it with Luca. We spoke a couple of times. Had some really nice chats. I have no idea where it is now. But it should be made. It’s really, really good. There’s some wonderful stuff in it.”

The actor, who also starred in last month’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey with Margot Robbie, will reprise his role of The Penguin/Oz Cobb for the third time in Matt Reeves’ long-awaited The Batman: Part II, which is now expected to shoot early in 2026 for a 2027 Fall release, again starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. Farrell praised the script even higher, and said he had his first meetings with Reeves about his appearance in the film, which is reportedly smaller than in The Batman, adding:

“I had so many thoughts and feelings to share with Matt about the script. I really do think it’s a masterwork. Kind of a contemporary genre masterwork. It’s so brilliant, and Robert [Pattinson] has got such a lovely journey to go on and take the audience through. It’s dense. It’s really, really intelligent. It’s so detailed. It’s really extraordinary. I think he’s going to make an extraordinary film.”

Farrell has also shared that the sequel takes place a few weeks after the events of The Penguin series.

Ballad of a Small Player is available to stream on Netflix now. The Batman: Part II is set for release in October 2027.
