Netflix’s currently untitled Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina series has found its star: Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka will officially be taking on the role of teenaged witch Sabrina Spellman.
The new series is set to be more faithful to Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina graphic novels than other TV adaptations have been in the past, veering into the horror arena somewhat.
“We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
“I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage and boldness that has made the character a fan favourite,” added Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater.
The new series will revolve around Sabrina’s origins. In the comics, the witch was born to a warlock father and a mortal mother before she was promised to Satan as an infant and was set to be placed in a coven to grow up with a group of other witches.
However, her mother didn’t want that life for her daughter and attempted to run away with her. When the escape plan inevitably failed, Sabrina was sent to Greendale (a neighbouring town to Riverdale) to live with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda.
The rest of the show’s cast is yet to be confirmed.
