Charlie Hunnam, star of Sons Of Anarchy and Pacific Rim, will lead the cast of Guy Ritchie’s upcoming King Arthur reboot.

Deadline reports that Hunnam will play King Arthur in Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur. This is the latest in a long line of attempts to bring the classic myth back to the big screen; we could have seen Colin Farrell and Gary Oldman play Lancelot and Merlin in a film directed by David Dobkin, while Kit Harington and Joel Kinnaman had also been circling the same project.

Ritchie’s movie is the first in a planned epic series of six films, “a tentpole fantasy retelling of the Arthur legend,” with this first written by Joby Harold (Awake). The title suggests that the plot could fall in line with Ritchie’s penchant for an ensemble, and Deadline notes that Hunnam’s Pacific Rim co-star Idris Elba (who worked with Ritchie on Rocknrolla) is being rumoured for Merlin.

While the King Arthur story still conjures up not-particularly-pleasant memories of the 2004 film King Arthur starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley, if Ritchie can bring the same level of energy and fun that he gave Sherlock Holmes, we’re definitely interested.
